About AFC Stoneham
AFC Stoneham is one of the largest grassroots community football clubs in the UK, with 161 teams, over 1,700 players, and more than 500 managers and coaches. A report commissioned in 2025 highlighted the club’s significant impact, estimating that it contributes over £6.5 million in social value to the local community. The report concluded:
"AFC Stoneham helps to create a united football environment that tackles inequalities, delivers inspirational opportunities, and improves health for all within our community. The club is at the heart of the community, generating defined social, health and economic benefits."
Founded in 1919, the club has a proud history and today supports teams ranging from minnows through to senior level. Our men’s 1st team competes in the Isthmian South Central League, while our women’s 1st team competes in the Southern Regional League. In addition, we run a Player Development Centre, an FA Wildcats Centre for girls, and a Saturday Morning Fun Club for children aged 4–10. These initiatives, alongside a range of outreach programmes delivered under our AFC Stoneham in the Community banner, reinforce our role at the heart of local life.
We provide a structured player pathway into both male and female senior teams, while remaining fully committed to offering football opportunities for all ages and abilities. A key focus is our rapidly expanding youth section, particularly within the girls’ game, where we have grown from just one team to 34 teams in five years.
At AFC Stoneham, we believe football is more than just a game. It is a vehicle for developing life skills, promoting discipline, and fostering teamwork—values that support our young players both on and off the pitch as they grow.
The club also boasts a strong competitive history. Recent highlights include winning and retaining the Southampton Senior Cup in 2012 and 2013, before lifting the Hampshire League Cup in 2015 and earning promotion to the Sydenhams Wessex League. In our early seasons at this level, the club achieved consistent top-half finishes, including 5th place in the 2017/18 season.
Our centenary season (2018/19) marked a milestone in the club’s history, as we secured the Wessex League Division One title. This season also saw a memorable FA Cup run in our first appearance in the competition, alongside reaching the Southampton Senior Cup Final at St Mary’s Stadium.
Progress continued despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, which curtailed both the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons during our first period at Premier Division level. Across these disrupted campaigns, the club performed strongly, finishing 3rd in the points-per-game standings over 43 matches and narrowly missing out on promotion to Step 4 football. During the same period, our ladies’ team excelled, losing just one league match and earning promotion into the national women’s pyramid via the Southern Combination League.
The 2021/22 season proved highly successful, with the club winning 32 trophies across all teams. Notably, the Development Squad won all but one competition they entered, the U18 Athletic side completed a treble, and the U18 Girls secured a double, narrowly missing out on the JPL National Cup after reaching the final. The men’s first team finished 5th in the Wessex Premier League, while the women’s first team placed 4th in their debut season in the Southern Regional League.
Between the 2022/23 and 2024/25 seasons, the men’s first team consistently challenged for promotion, amassing 95 points in two seasons and 91 in another. Despite narrowly missing out—on goal difference in 2022/23 and via the play-offs in the following two seasons—the team secured silverware with the Hampshire FA Russell Cotes Cup in 2022/23. The 2024/25 season was particularly impressive, with only one league defeat and victories in both the Southampton Senior Cup (at St Mary’s Stadium) and the Hampshire Senior Cup for the first time in the club’s history.
The 2025/26 season stands as the most successful in the club’s history, as AFC Stoneham achieved an unprecedented quadruple. The men’s first team won the Wessex Premier League by a 14-point margin, securing promotion to Step 4 football in the Isthmian South Central League. This success was complemented by victory in the Russell Cotes Cup (5–2 against Fareham Town), retention of the Southampton Senior Cup (2–1 against Millbrook at Eastleigh’s Silverlake Stadium), and a historic FA Vase triumph at Wembley, defeating Cockfosters on penalties following a 0–0 draw.
As we look ahead, the club remains ambitious and committed to continued growth and success, both on and off the pitch. The future promises to build on this strong foundation, with further progress expected across all areas of the club.
